Learn a New Hobby at the Library

RIDGELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY, MISSISSIPPI, U.S.A.

How has this library supported healthy living?
Since January is Learn a New Hobby month, we have started giving out weekly take and make kits to patrons who may want to dabble in a new passion. One of the kits we are currently giving out is a fitness kit for older adults called “Sit and Stretch”, a kit that seeks to prove that staying active does not have to be extremely strenuous. It can, in fact, be relaxing! In the kit we include 1 medium-resistance Theraband and instructions for use as well as exercises and poses that can be done with the band while in a sitting position. These kits have been wildly popular and have given a few of our senior patrons a New Years resolution of staying active in 2022!

What impacts have you seen this work have?
The impacts of this work have been very broad and overall positive. We are seeking to provide dynamic library programming that does not involve being in the actual physical space of the library due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These kits, approximately 25 are being given out weekly, are sure to be a positive part of our library service that could even turn into an ongoing, take-home program.
