Fairport Harbor Public Library
FAIRPORT HARBOR, OHIO, U.S.A.
How has this library supported healthy living?
In 2017 we began a group called Try Something New that invited people to share food one evening a month. The group was a mixed bag of food choices with many vegans and vegetarians in the mix. Average attendance was approximately 17 people. We are currently growing an indoor winter garden that will , hopefully, offer fresh herbs and some fresh peas and beans to share.
What impacts have you seen this work have?
This work helped to start partnerships with two local businesses and the Village Garden. It also prompted a conversation about preparing videos in our Test Kitchen beginning in 2021 about preparing food that was typically available in the food pantry. Beans and lentils can be more than soup. Again we partnered with Wild Spork a vegan food truck to make the videos and chef Lee Negrelli is creative and a huge advocate of feeding people. During summer fresh food distribution amny of our videos we based on what was available from local distributions.
